How to Throw a Perfect Surprise Party

Surprise parties are a great way to do something special for someone you care about. And while they are fun, they can be tricky to plan- especially if you live with the guest of the hour! While the term “surprise party” makes them seem casual, a fair deal of planning is involved to ensure it’s truly a surprise. Below are our tips to ensure your surprise party goes off without a hitch!

Assemble Your Party Planning Team

A surprise party contains multiple moving parts. Compile a team of trusted friends or family to help you plan, prepare, and finalize. Having someone who can drive the unsuspecting guest to the party is great if you’ll be spending time setting up and getting everyone in place!

Pick a Date, Time, and Guest List

With your team, begin determining the best party day and time, as well as the guest list. It can be hard to make sure the recipient is free without arising suspicion, so this is a great time for your team to step in. Many opt to have a friend ask to hang out with the guest, ensuring that they’ll be out, but with someone who knows they have a party to get to! Keep invitations a secret, or even have guests RSVP to your team rather than you!

Tip: Make sure you tell your guests that it is a surprise party! Many would-be surprise parties have been foiled by an innocent “Hey, can’t wait for your party next weekend!”.

Start (Sneakily) Planning The Party

This can be hard to do! You and your team know the guest best, so start planning with the team. Getting information from the guest of honor is great, but it can be hard without raising suspicion. Casually bring up features from parties you have been to or seen online, and see if any elements get a strong reaction from them.

For food and venue, there are a few choices. Is the party at home? If so, will you get the party catered or have it potluck style? Or, is the party taking place at a restaurant or bar? If so, are you doing a buffet or just having people order off the menu?

Once these are finalized, you can begin delegating if need be. If you’re hosting the party at a home or non-public place, ensure guests either carpool or park away from the house. Nothing gives away a surprise party like a block lined with your friends and family’s cars.

Tip: If your guest of honor starts getting suspicious, we have a trick up our sleeve. We suggest ordering one of our singing telegrams to their work. It’s a fun surprise, and they’ll assume that’s why you were sneakily planning! Little do they know that they’re in store for an amazing surprise party!
